Casa de los Arcos

Dear Editor:

In response to recent discussions surrounding the changes with Casa de los Arcos, Housing Solutions for the Southwest would like to clarify that there is currently no formal proposal on the table for Housing Solutions for the Southwest to take over the management of Casa de los Arcos. We have been contacted by a couple of the county commissioners and by several residents of Casa to see if we can lend our expertise during future conversations about options for the property and senior services overall. We have agreed to be at the table and provide any help we can.

Housing Solutions is the only long-standing agency providing housing-related services in southwest Colorado, having served this region for over 30 years. Housing Solutions is known as a “one stop shop” offering multiple housing services in southwest Colorado and is the only agency in the region offering comprehensive housing services in conjunction with case management. We also manage the 130 Archuleta, La Plata and San Juan county Housing Choice vouchers. The agency also builds and repairs properties for low and moderate income residents. Additionally, we provide emergency heating repair and replacement for residents who qualify at no charge. The organization handled over 7,000 client inquires last year and directly assisted over 1,500 clients, many of whom were Archuleta County residents.

Many Pagosa residents know us best for our role in Socorro, a 19-unit apartment complex for seniors next door to Casa. Jim Fait is our manager of Socorro and he does an extraordinary job in being the day-to-day manager and also keeping the building in tip-top shape. He goes that extra mile to ensure that the residents are safe and happy. The board of directors governing Socorro has expressed only praise for the management of the project and the financials look excellent.

Casa de los Arcos will face many challenges in the coming years, including maintenance issues related to an aging building. Archuleta County and the Housing Authority will have important decisions to make about how best to transition management and fiduciary responsibilities. This will take diligence with people working closely together. It is Housing Solution’s hope that everyone put aside politics and remember it is the seniors living at Casa de los Arcos that matter.
