Special to The PREVIEW
If it’s big, Broadway musicals you’re looking for, look no further this summer than the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts. Thingamajig Theatre Company, the professional organization in residence at PSCA, is highlighting another smash season of entertainment featuring Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Les Miserables in Concert” and “A Chorus Line” in repertory through Aug. 24. Shows run Wednesday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
This season, the company of professional actors features an ensemble of dancers unlike any in previous seasons at Thingamajig. Producing Artistic Director Tim Moore commented, “When we scheduled ‘A Chorus Line’ into our season, it changed the scope of our casting drastically. The ‘Line’ demands such strong dancers, that we ended up with an ensemble for the other three shows that other companies would only dream of.”
Indeed, you won’t find dancers any better in southwest Colorado this season.
“It’s a testament to our choreographer and director, Ryan Hazelbaker. His standards for excellence are very high and he’s brought choreography you’d normally enjoy on a forty-foot stage and fit it for our thirty-foot stage,” remarks Moore.
Hazelbaker, in his seventh production with Thingamajig, has been busy this season as well with projects at Creede Repertory Theatre, Allenberry Playhouse and Phantom Theatre Company.
PSCA Executive Director Laura Moore adds, “Ryan is the heartbeat of the summer company. His energy, commitment and dedication to each project he’s involved in, spreads throughout the company and drives us forward.”
In addition to serving as director/choreographer for “A Chorus Line,” Hazelbaker, whose unofficial home is Pagosa Springs, is slated to direct and choreograph productions in the upcoming 2014-2015 fall/winter season as well.
As the actors in the company prepare for the opening night of “A Chorus Line” (July 24), another date you won’t want to miss is on the horizon. On July 29 at 7 p.m., Thingamajig Theatre Company presents the first annual “Broadway Gala” at PSCA. This fundraiser for the company features an evening of entertainment presented by the actors and accompanied by local pianist Venita Burch.
“If you love our performers this season, you do not want to miss this evening,” added Laura Moore. “It’s a great way to see more of our performers and help contribute to the theatre company. We’re a 501(c)3 organization and every bit of financial supports helps us to continue operating each season.”
Tickets to the gala are on sale now and available online or by phone and are $50 per person.
Don’t miss a single performance this summer season. Come out, let us entertain you for an evening or afternoon and experience the joy of “Broadway in the Mountains.”
