Facts, fiction, food … and FUN!!!
Of turkey and Democrats
Fri, Oct 2, 2009
I’m checking out the TV news — cable, but not descending to the depths. There is no oxygen in the world where folks like Glenn Beck drift so, without air tanks and a pressure suit, I can’t travel there.

No, I’m watching regular, fairly credible journalistic accounts of the day’s happenings and, unfortunately, I catch some of the committee proceedings dealing with healthcare reform.

I am already mad enough about the corporate and media manipulation of “protests,” and I have seethed enough about the fact that all one has to do in too many cases is trace a legislator’s vote back to his or her campaign contributions (regarding healthcare or just about an other subject) in order to encounter the reasons for the decision, and now I have to put up with the Democrats.

I am neither Republican nor Democrat. I distrust both, and find fewer real differences between them with each passing day. But, at the moment, despite the Republicans’ pointless naysaying and increasingly empty agenda, the Democrats have risen to the No. 1 spot in my Seethe Chart.

With a bullet.

Not that I agree with most of the proposals advanced by Democrats recently, but all I can think is: What a bunch of pansies!

Here is a party that swept into power and (ostensibly) control and has done ... what?

The one opportunity this party has had in how many years?, and it squanders it, rolling around in the mire, capitulating in the service of a phantom bipartisan movement, unable to move decisively. All at the expense of Americans who are being broken under the wheel of increasing joblessness and crippling costs— at the expense of a middle class that is dying on the vine, of a growing legion of the poor, of desperate and confused people more susceptible by the day to the rantings of would-be tyrants, racists and regressive trogs.

And now the Dems are on the verge of losing midterm elections to a legion of feebs whose strings are pulled by television and radio ideologues and muttonheads.

Turkeys. That’s what the Dems are: turkeys.

Which brings me to something nearly as important: What to do with ground turkey?

If I am going to stop seething, I need to start cooking. And I have a package of 85/15 ground turkey in the fridge awaiting treatment.

I must do something decisive. Something interesting, Something productive.

Unlike the Democrats.

One thought haunts me as I ponder my options. I know the 85/25 refers to the flesh to fat content. Where do they get the fat?

I decide to try a different turn with a turkey burger.

Problem 1: Ground turkey can dry out in a heartbeat. To counter this potential problem, I consider additives. Finely chopped white onion, chopped parsley, a couple tablespoons mayonnaise, a bit of Dijon mustard, a couple fists full of panko bread crumbs.

Seasoning? Kosher salt, pepper, ground cumin, a touch of dried oregano, chopped parsley.

I heat the skillet over medium high heat and splash in some olive oil. In go the burgers. I brown one side and flip them. After a couple minutes, I toss in some chopped white onion and I cook it for a while. In goes some mushed garlic and a cup or so of chicken stock. I find half a can of salsa ranchera in the fridge and I add the salsa. Some more chopped parsley? Why not? A dusting of ground cumin and some oregano? Sure.

I reduce the stock by two-thirds then plop a thick slab of medium-sharp cheddar atop each burger. On goes a lid, down goes the heat. When the cheese is gooey, I toss a knob of butter in the sauce, stir and take the pan off the burner.

Not bad with either roasted sweet potato or fried potatoes, green peas with butter and black pepper, some dressed greens.

Turkey.

Gives me the energy to watch the news.
