| The message board has been a-buzz with offerings of Desert Island disks (OK — one participant so far) and it’s time I get moving on starting my own list.
As I said, I’ll post one per blog and give an extended explanation for each.
Since we’re not asking for rankings, my selections aren’t in any particular order: As far as I’m concerned, they’re all equal in their excellence. So, just because this blog’s entry happens to be the first I’ve listed, it’s not necessarily the best (or the worst, if you’re thinking I’m working in descending order) — it just happens to be the first one that came to mind.
“Exile on Main St.” is, in my estimation, the Rolling Stones’ masterpiece. While several Stones’ albums would be worthy of a lifetime on Desert Island, Exile is my choice. It is where they’ve perfected their nod to blues and R&B while coming into their own as superb songwriters and composers. “Happy” and “Tumbling Dice” have to be two of the best songs created by the Glimmer Twins (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards), while “Shine a Light” and “Loving Cup” are strangely beautiful in a way that helps the album stand out.
“Exile on Main St.” is a landmark, representing the band at the top of their game, both as musicians and as the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World. It is the pinnacle of their career. Yes, they would continue on (perhaps a bit too long) to create great music but nothing to equal “Exile on Main St.”
