Special to The PREVIEW
The Bill McKay Band is headlining the Bands, Brews, Etc. event on Sept. 21.
Enjoy a day under the big tent at the Town Park athletic field. The concert begins at 2 p.m. with Pagosa’s Brooks-i Band , followed by the Bill McKay Band.
The Bill McKay Band is the next great step in the already storied music career of keyboardist and singer-songwriter Bill McKay. Bill has spent the last 15 years as a primary songwriter, singer and pianist/Hammond organ player for two world renowned bands: The Derek Trucks Band and Leftover Salmon. After touring the world and headlining on some of the biggest and most highly respected stages and at festivals around with these great groups, the time came to focus on his own songs and sound with the Bill McKay Band.
It was a natural move — Bill had already been playing in side projects for almost 20 years with well-known guitarist and singer/songwriter Ash Ganley (who’s original music has been used featured by major films, HBO, ABC and Canadian television), and the timing was right put together a band that includes some of the Denver/Boulder metro area’s finest players. Drummer Chris Carland moved to Colorado from southern California to play in national touring rock/bluegrass band Shanti Groove. Bassist Kyle Ussery, originally from Georgia, has played with numerous Colorado-based touring bands.
Together, these four great musicians have an easy friendship and musical bond that shows itself in their seamless, connected and dynamic performances. Effortlessly gliding between a wide swath of genres — bluegrass to Delta blues, old country to New Orleans funk — a Bill McKay Band show is like an exciting trip down the diverse highway of American musical history. Something familiar, something unexpected, always potent, and delivered by one of the best in the business.
