Audition for ‘Pippin’ on April 26

Special to The PREVIEW

It is time to put on your dancing shoes and warm up your vocal chords to audition for the Curtains Up Pagosa! summer production of “Pippin,” scheduled for performances at Pagosa Springs High School June 28, 29, and 30 and July 3, 5 and 6.

Auditions will be held in the Pagosa Springs High School music room on Friday afternoon, April 26, from 2-6 p.m. Those planning to audition should prepare a song and provide sheet music for the accompanist. Auditioners will also learn a brief dance routine to perform with a group in order to demonstrate agility and movement skills.

The musical is about Pippin, the first son of Charlemagne, whose life has been carefully molded and orchestrated by his father, providing him a strong education so that he would be ready to someday take over the kingdom. Pippin, upon his completion of his studies, feels his life should hold more meaning, a higher goal, some sort of extraordinary purpose and tries to break the mold his father has set for him by setting out on his own journey.

The character of The Lead Player serves as a narrator of sorts, but also serves as Pippin’s ego or “devil on the shoulder,” a hedonistic glory-hound, encouraging Pippin to gain personal notoriety and fame. Pippin goes through a number of superficial life adventures as he tries to find his “corner of the sky.” He becomes a warrior, a king, a playboy, a lover, a father figure, and a seeker of truth, but finds life to be pointless and empty of meaning as he is led by the Lead Player from one misadventure to the next. The play ends in a rather abrupt manner, giving its audience an unexpected but ultimately satisfying completion.

“In our auditions we will be looking primarily for mature actors in the high school, college and adult age group. There is only one male child character in the show around age 10,” said director Dale Johnson. “However, we encourage all age groups to come and audition, if only for the experience of auditioning.”

Pippin has a cast of 25-30 players that includes the leading roles of Pippin, his father Charles (Charlemagne), his mother Fastrada, his grandmother Berthe, his girlfriend Catherine and her young son, Pippin’s brother Lewis, and the Narrator (Leading Player). There are also supporting roles called the Band of Players.

Curtains Up Pagosa! (formerly Music Boosters) is in its 24th year and is excited to continue its outstanding tradition of providing excellent musical theater to the community. Proceeds from this production go towards supporting arts in the schools, providing scholarships to students majoring in the performing arts, and adult mentoring for young performing arts students. Volunteers are always needed for costuming, set construction, ticket sales, concessions, pit orchestra, and production assistance. The cast and musicians are also completely volunteer, allowing proceeds to be more fully utilized for furthering arts education.

Auditions are open to the community. No prior experience is required.
