Arrest warrant issued following assault

An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for a man allegedly involved in an Aug. 4 incident that included assault and vehicle theft.

That arrest warrant was issued for Brian Roy Gomez, 25, of the Farmington area. As of Tuesday afternoon, Gomez was still being treated at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, said Detective Jacob Beach of the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office.

Charges on the arrest warrant are criminal attempt of murder in the second degree, assault in the second degree and aggravated motor vehicle theft, Beach stated.

The warrant resulted from an incident that took place the night of Monday, Aug. 4. (See related story.)

That night, law enforcement was called out to a site along U.S. 160 near Chimney Rock at 9:40 p.m.

Beach reported that, earlier that night, Gomez went to the house of Vern Carel, 29, in the Beaver Meadows area (near the Archuleta-La Plata county line) and asked for a ride.

Carel then gave Gomez a ride from the Beaver Meadows area to the area of Chimney Rock, where an assault then allegedly took place, Beach reported.

During that assault, Beach reported that Carel, the driver, received lacerations to his head and hands, while Gomez received lacerations and one stab wound to his right chest, under his arm.

A second passenger, an unidentified woman who was reported as being seven months pregnant, was not injured.

Upon responding to the incident, ACSO deputies allegedly found Gomez in Carel’s vehicle approximately 3 miles west of the store near Chimney Rock.

Carel was reportedly found near the intersection of U.S. 160 and Devil Mountain Road and was on foot.

Both men were treated at Pagosa Springs Medical Center, Beach stated. Carel was subsequently released, while Gomez was transported to Mercy for additional medical treatment.
