In 1962, local resident Russ Hill and a handful of other members of Community United Methodist Church got together “to make a few wreaths to make a little money for a small number of church endeavors.”
Fast forward and this is the 50th year for this fund-raiser and the occasion is being celebrated from now through Nov. 30.
Orders can be placed in person at the church at 434 Lewis St., by phone at the bazaar order desk, 264-4538, or by mail.
Orders can be placed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays from now through Nov. 30 with the exception of Nov. 22 and 23 when the “workshop” will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving.
No orders can be processed after the Nov. 30 deadline.
The phone number is a dedicated bazaar line and is not the same as the church office number. Mail-order information has been sent to individuals who placed orders last year.
The wreaths and table arrangements are made from fresh boughs that have been cut locally within the past week. The local pinecones used in decorating the wreaths have been beautiful and prolific this year.
There are three sizes of wreaths to choose from. The medium wreath measures approximately 18 inches across and is $25. The large wreath is about 25 inches wide and is $30. The extra-large wreath measures about 33 inches and the cost is $50.
Medium and large wreaths can be shipped by UPS throughout the continental U.S. for approximately $13. Shipping is not available for the extra-large wreaths. Mail orders delivered by UPS require a street address as well as a phone number for the recipient, so be sure to bring that information with you when you order. The written size description can be deceiving, so you might check a yardstick for a visual image before you order.
The basic wreath price includes a large bow (with a choice of several colors) and a nice array of fresh pinecones. Custom-colored bows and a large variety of themed embellishments are also available for you to choose from. The final cost of a custom order will depend on the embellishments that are selected. You can also opt to bring in your favorite ornaments or decorations for your wreaths or centerpieces.
Table arrangements will be made for Thanksgiving as well as for Christmas and Hanukkah. You can place custom orders or select from a wide variety of arrangements that will be on display daily at the front of the church. The ready-made arrangements can be taken with you or shipped via UPS. These items are individually priced, and the shipping cost will be determined by size and availability of shipping boxes.
Nonprofit groups throughout the community can apply to the Bazaar board for grants for specific projects or activities. Each year, groups within the church and throughout the Pagosa Springs area benefit from your purchases, and you and/or your gift recipients will benefit by enjoying a beautiful, long-lasting “homegrown and handmade” symbol of the holiday season.
Everyone is welcome to drop by the “workshop” at the church between 9 a.m. and noon, or 1-3 p.m. to see the wreath-making process. This is quite a joyous production, involving upwards of 40 individuals on any given workday.
