The Pirate volleyball team charged the floor last Thursday, kept their heads in the game and triumphed over Monte Vista in three sets: 25-8, 25-20, 25-17.
“We played really well, and our serve was our best weapon,” coach Connie O’Donnell said. “I was proud of the girls for having such a high percentage on serves. We still have not had a perfect serving game and that is still a goal.”
Junior Anissa Lucero led the way at the service line, serving 22 times with four aces and no errors. Senior Angie Gallegos was close behind with 21 serves, one ace and one error.
Senior Gabby Pajak had seven kills and 17 attacks, and sophomore Payton Shahan had six kills with 14 attacks.
Senior Megan Davey had 11 assists, while Lucero had nine assists.
Pajak had 18 digs, Gallegos 20 digs. Pajak had 15 serve receives, Gallegos 14.
On Tuesday night, the Pirates faced Center in a home game, and the Pirates, with attention and execution, won the game in four sets.
“Overall we played well, even though we had to mix things up a bit in the lineup,” O’Donnell said.
Junior Rosie Graveson is out due to health issues, but O’Donnell said she might be able to play in Saturday’s game. Freshman Madison Lewis moved to outside hitter position, and O’Donnell rotated freshmen LaShae Smith and Miah Pitcher, as well as junior Alexa Alexander in at the outside.
“All three girls stepped up and played well.” O’Donnell said, adding, “We played well in the game when we were aggressive, but we were not always aggressive.”
Gallegos had 31 digs. Pajak had 13 kills in the game, followed by Shahan with eight kills and senior Elle McGinn with seven. Davey had 11 assists, and Lucero had 10 assists.
Tonight, the Pirates play Alamosa at 6 p.m., at home.
“They (Alamosa) are ahead of us right now in rankings so it would be a big win for us if we could come away with a victory,” O’Donnell said. The Pirates last faced Alamosa in an early September tournament, a game the Pirates lost.
Saturday the Pirates play Centauri at 6 p.m. at La Jara. Then,Tuesday, Oct. 9, the ladies take on Bayfield, in Bayfield, at 6 p.m.
