The seventh annual Mountain Chile Cha Cha is just around the corner, taking place Saturday, Aug. 25, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., in Town Park in downtown Pagosa Springs.
The Cha Cha includes a morning trail race for all ages and abilities, a green chile cookoff and tasting, a beer garden and a free concert featuring Nosotros. This band is guaranteed to have the crowd on their feet. The event is rain or shine, with a covered stage and admission is free.
Entries will be accepted for the fifth annual Patty Aragon Green Chile Classic cookoff through today, Sept. 23. If you would like to compete, contact Jacque at 264-4237 to arrange a time to drop off your entry. First place in Green Chile with Meat, Meatless Green Chile and Overall People’s Choice will win $200 each. Additionally, trophies and medals will be awarded to the top three entrants in each category. If the judges and the people agree, one entrant could conceivably take home $600 in cash.
If you think you make a great green chile, now is the chance to prove it. It’s just $5 per entry and you can enter both categories if you wish. Entry forms are available to download online at pagosaspringsdining.com.
The chile tasting will get underway at 12:30 p.m. Tasters are encouraged to put in their vote for the People’s Choice award.
Music starts at 1:30 p.m., with a short break for the awards ceremony at 3:30.
The trail runs start the day. Through the generosity of the Levine family a large portion of the run takes place on private property know as Reservoir River Ranch. The Ranch is otherwise inaccessible and we ask that you be respectful of this beautiful property and treat it as if it were your own. All entrants will receive a great shirt, all finishers will receive a fun finishers’ award and the topthree men and women will receive special awards.
The 5k run is 100-percent off-road. In the spirit of trail running we’ve added more off-road terrain this year.
The 10K run is a challenging loop, with more than 700 feet of climbing. The course consists of approximately a halfmile of paved road, the balance being trail, which ranges from dirt road to double track to single track. The trail is mountainous and scenic with awesome views as well as challenging climbing and descending. Additionally, this course features a family and spectator-friendly finish though downtown Pagosa Springs.
The Half Marathon is the 10k loop plus an additional loop with a nice little hill thrown in.
Perhaps the most unique and exciting part of this race is its relationship with the Mountain Chile Cha Cha festival. What better way to round out the day than to enjoy live music, cold beer and great food? If it’s hot you can cool off in the San Juan River or relax under the park trees while the chiles cook and the music rocks.
Race packet pickup is Friday night 5-8 p.m., at The Hub bike shop. U.S.160 and N. Pagosa Blvd. You can also pick up packets race day at the start finish, from 7-8 a.m.
All runs begin and end in Town Park. The 5k, 10k and Half Marathon begin at 8:30 a.m.
