Bernice Douglas Smith, 89, of Newport, Ore., passed away June 29, 2012, in Newport, Ore. She was born Sept. 3, 1922, in Portland, Ore., the daughter of Roy O. and Roberta Vinson.
Bernice was united in marriage to Vern L. Smith on March 8, 1946, in Astoria, Ore. Bernice was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who lived in logging camps and ranches around Oregon. She also lived in Ely, Nev.; Cedarville, Calif.; Pagosa Springs, Colo.; and Flagstaff, Ariz., before finally settling in Oregon.
Her professional life was spent in accounting. She worked for county and state agencies, real estate, ranching, and ran her own successful business. Bernice was an avid reader, gardener, and she enjoyed knitting and quilting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, a son-in-law, and a great-grandchild.
Bernice is survived by her children Diane Pinkerton of Newport, Oregon, Neal (Nora) Smith of Pagosa Springs, Barbara (John) Jackson of Delta, Colo., Rebecca Smith of Pagosa Springs, 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren.
Bernice’s family held a private service at Willamette National Cemetery.
