Scott Hagler, organist and director of music at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Durango, will be the music clinician and director for this year’s St. Patrick’s Choral Workshop, to be held Friday, July 20, through Sunday, July 22.
This year, the music will center on the arrangements of Moses Hogan, an important contributor to the perpetuation and preservation of Negro spirituals in our American music repertoire. The spirituals covered in the workshop will include: “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?” “Down by the Riverside,” “Steal Away,” “Wade in the Water” and “We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace.”
The music is mildly challenging, fun to sing, vocally instructive and inspiring to those who hear it.
The workshop will culminate in a choral performance at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 22, as part of St. Patrick’s Sunday Night Unplugged.
Registration for the workshop will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, July 20, at St. Patrick’s, with the choral workshop rehearsal running from 4-6:30. The workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, will break for lunch at noon and resume at 1:30 p.m., ending at 6:30. Breaks will be included throughout the day. On Sunday afternoon, the group will meet at 2 p.m. and rehearse until 3:30. The workshop will conclude with a performance for Sunday Night Unplugged beginning at 5.
Singers are not required to audition. Anyone, whether a novice or experienced singer, is invited to attend. The cost for the workshop is $25 per person, which includes the cost of the music, payable at the time of registration.
Those wishing to participate are asked to call the church office at 731-5801 in advance of the registration so that sufficient numbers of copies of the music are available.
