Battling spring fever?
Need a good book to read?
Why not solve both problems with this year’s Hawaiian Luau Book Fair at the Pagosa Springs Elementary School?
The annual book fair is underway, with Hawaiian Family Night being held tonight, Thursday.
In addition to the book fair being open to the public, the event features a variety of family-friendly activities and a visit from illustrator Lynne Avril, who has illustrated over 60 books.
Among those activities available will be a Hula-Hoop contest with prizes for all ages, a story musical performance of Jimmy Buffet’s “Jolly Mon,” a family vacation photo room where you can take photos in front of a beach scene, put your face in a totem pole or put your face on a surfer riding the waves.
The highlight of the evening, however, will be the visit by Avril, who has illustrated over 60 books, including the Amelia Bedilia and “Every Cowgirl Needs a Horse” series, as well as other nationally recognized books.
Avril will discuss how books go from transcripts to stories that are complete with pictures.
She will hold two sessions that include a presentation and painting time, at 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. Space in each session is limited.
To prepare for her visit, PSES students have been painting “Cowgirl” pictures in art class this week.
The Hawaiian Family Night takes place at PSES, from 5-7 p.m. tonight. Frito pie will be served.
The Luau Book Fair is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., until March 22 and is open to the public.
Family Night is sponsored by Pagosa Elementary P.I.E. (Partners in Education), as well as by private donations.
