Register for adult basketball opens Jan. 30

The Pagosa Springs Recreation Department will accept team registrations for the 2012 adult men’s and women’s basketball leagues from Jan. 30–Feb. 17.

Staff will accept registrations for men’s recreation league, men’s competitive league and women’s recreation league. However, if there are not at least four teams registered for the women’s league by the deadline, the women’s league will be canceled.

Registration forms will be available at the department office in Town Hall. Team registration fees are $250 per team, plus a $30 fee per player.

The leagues are tentatively scheduled to begin in early March. Call the recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232, for more information.

Youth basketball

Youth basketball schedules are available in the recreation office in Town Hall and can also be downloaded through the recreation department link at www.townofpagosasprings.com.

Until the latter part of the season, games in the 9-10 division will be played at the Ross Aragon Community Center Tuesdays and Thursdays, while games in the 11-12 division will be played Mondays and Wednesdays at the community center. The seasons will run through early March.

Indoor soccer

Soccer enthusiasts in grades 5 and up have until 5 p.m. Feb. 8 to register a team for the second annual “Box and Ball” indoor soccer tournament.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the school district’s Destination ImagiNation teams; the tournament will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, in the middle school gymnasiums. Concessions will be available from 7:30 a.m. until day’s end, and a silent auction is scheduled from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

The entry fee is $100 per team. Six-player coed teams in each of the following age brackets will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis: grades 5- 6, 7-8, high school and adult. Tournament rules mandate that at least one female player from each team must be on the court at all times. First- and second-place prizes will be awarded in each division.

On a related note, pick-up style indoor soccer will be offered (free) at the Ross Aragon Community Center from 10 a.m.-noon on the following dates: Feb. 4, and March 10, 17 and 31.

For more information, contact Cheryl Bowdridge at (970) 903-9147.

Skate pond

The skate pond behind the River Center remains open for the season.

The skate pond’s hours of operation are from dawn to 10 p.m. every day, except during the nights when ice-maintenance operations are being performed.

Resurfacing of the ice will typically be scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings unless weather conditions keep the work from taking place. On those nights, the pond will be closed at 6 p.m.

A minimum ice thickness of four inches will be regularly monitored, but thin spots can occur, and an effort to mark them with orange safety cones will be made. Pond users are requested to leave the safety cones in place.

We also ask that no foreign objects be thrown onto the ice. The pond will remain open until safety concerns require its closure. Enjoy the ice.
