Soccer enthusiasts in grades five and up have until 5 p.m. Feb. 8 to register a team for the second annual “Box and Ball” indoor soccer tournament.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the school district’s “Destination ImagiNation” teams; the tournament will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, in the middle school gymnasiums. Concessions will be available from 7:30 a.m. until day’s end, and a silent auction is scheduled from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
The entry fee is $100 per team. Six-player, coed teams in each of the following age brackets will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis: grades 5-6, 7-8, high school and adult. Tournament rules mandate that at least one female player from each team must be on the court at all times. First- and second-place prizes will be awarded in each division.
On a related note, pick-up style indoor soccer will be offered (free) at the Ross Aragon Community Center from 10 a.m.-noon on the following dates: Jan. 14, Feb. 4, and March 10, 17 and 31.
For more information, contact Cheryl Bowdridge at (970) 903-9147.
Youth basketball schedules are available in the recreation office in Town Hall and can also be downloaded through the recreation department link at www.townofpagosasprings.com.
Games in the 9-10 division will be played in the Ross Aragon Community Center Tuesdays and Thursdays, while games in the 11-12 division will be played Mondays and Wednesdays in the community center. Games begin Jan. 23. The seasons will run through early March.
Parents who have not heard from a head coach should contact the recreation office to obtain roster information.
For more information, contact Darren Lewis, recreation supervisor, at 264-4151, Ext. 231.
The Town of Pagosa Springs is again conducting a Christmas tree recycling program. Trees to be recycled can be dropped off at a newly-designated site at the south end of South Fifth Street (just past Yamaguchi Park) through the end of March.
Look for the signs directing recyclers to the collection area. The parks department asks that recyclers remove all lights, tinsel and ornaments before leaving trees. The parks department will chip the collected trees into mulch to be used for various landscaping projects in the town parks during the coming season.
Residents are encouraged to participate in this worthwhile undertaking; for more information, call the parks department office at 264-4151, Ext. 233.
The skate pond behind the River Center is open for the season.
The skate pond’s hours of operation are from dawn to 10 p.m. every day, except during the nights when ice-maintenance operations are being performed.
Resurfacing of the ice will typically be scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings unless weather conditions keep the work from taking place. On those nights, the pond will be closed at 6 p.m.
A minimum ice thickness of four inches will be regularly monitored, but thin spots can occur, and an effort to mark them with orange safety cones will be made. Pond users are requested to leave the safety cones in place.
We also ask that no foreign objects be thrown onto the ice. The pond will remain open until safety concerns require its closure. Enjoy the ice.
Coaches and parents who ordered youth basketball (7-8 division) photos can contact Jeff Laydon at Pagosa Photography, 264-3686, to arrange pick up of their orders. The recreation office will provide sponsors with team plaques and pictures as soon as they are available.
The recreation staff would also like to thank Mr. Laydon for accommodating another busy schedule during this year’s youth volleyball season.
This year marks the 15th year Jeff has offered professional photography service to our programs while donating all of the team photographs used in the commemorative plaques free of charge; thanks again.
