Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado has been changing the lives of children in Archuleta County for the better, forever, since 2000.
We accomplish this by providing children facing adversity with strong enduring, professionally supported one-on-one relationships.
The mentors we have here in Pagosa are amazing. They generously give of themselves to positively impact children in our community.
BBBS has partnered with many local businesses to offer our matches low-cost or no-cost activities in addition to our sponsored outings. This way, our matches can enjoy a variety of outings that they might not normally be able to afford.
In 2011, BBBS focused on education for many of our sponsored activities to spark imagination and cultivate interest in new things.
In June, we were fortunate enough to receive a grant from the San Juan Outdoor Club that allowed eight people to go on our annual rafting trip. This rafting trip down the San Juan River through Mesa Canyon also incorporated the knowledge and experiences of Pete Peterson. He is a wilderness survivalist and river specialist, who shared his knowledge of the river, its history and geology, as well as edible and medicinal plants. He was able to ride in each of the boats the BBBS filled and also entertained us at lunch by identifying many of the edible plants in the area. With the help of the San Juan Outdoor Club, many people who normally would not be able to attend were able to take advantage of this special event.
Other BBBS outings included working together and brushing off the engineering skills to build a model rocket for the summer picnic, and we scheduled an Archaeoastromony Night that was unfortunately cancelled due to weather, but hopefully will be rescheduled for this spring.
Many thanks to the San Juan Outdoor Club for providing the opportunity of a wonderfully educational outdoor experience for the Bigs and Littles of our community.
We are always looking for mentors who enjoy having fun while positively impacting the life of a child for the better, forever.
