Melvin Gene”“Mel” Sorrels, 83, moved on to greener pastures Friday, Dec. 16, 2011. He has been looking for Verna for a long time; hopefully, he caught up with her. Melvin was born in Kiowa, Okla., and moved to Pagosa Springs, Colo., in 1948. The time he spent working on ranches in the Upper Piedra defined his life and created the cowboy he was until the end. He may have been the original “horse whisperer” before it was popular.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Verna; survived by sister, Mary Stites; brother, Junior Sorrels; children, Mike, Jimmie, Ron and Nancy Schutz; grandchildren, Shane Sorrels, Cole Sorrels, Kimberly, KC, Jamie Garner, Alan Schutz, Adam Schutz, Matt Sorrels, Daniel Sorrels, Michael Sorrels, Michael and David; great-grandchildren, Tanner, Shana, Kullen, Taeler, Noah, Chase, Hannah, Luke, Anissa, Eli and Emma.
The family will take Melvin for one last beer at the “bucket of blood” and his ashes will be scattered in the mountains he loved. “Good enough for who it’s for.”
