Members of Pagosa Springs High School Choir will be guest musicians at this week’s Sunday Night Unplugged service at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Sunday at 5 p.m.
The choir, under the direction of Dan Burch and accompanied by Venita Burch, will present music for a service of Lessons and Carols, a traditional Anglican service in which seasonal music is interspersed with prophetic scripture lessons and prayers anticipating the birth of Christ.
The service of Lessons and Carols was developed in 1880 by Edward White Benson who was later to become Archbishop of Canterbury. It has become a featured event at Kings College Cambridge each Christmas eve, where it has become internationally anticipated and enjoyed on broadcasts around the world. Sunday Night Unplugged will present a modified version of this service that will include Christmas hymns and anthems.
Though this service is free and open to the public, a free-will offering will be received to benefit the high school choir to assist with costs for their travel to Denver in the spring to compete in a statewide choral event. The multi-award winning Pagosa Springs High School Choir consists of about 60 singers, many of whom have won individual awards and honors. This year, the choir has a record number of five All State Choir members who will perform in Denver in February.
“We are honored and excited to welcome this wonderful group of singers to St. Patrick’s,” says The Rev. Doug Neel, rector of St. Patrick’s. “I have a personal appreciation for the work Dan Burch does with these young musicians, as my own son, Robert, was privileged to sing under his direction for three years. I sincerely appreciate the importance and value of the music program at the high school and the wonderful work that is being done under Dan’s direction.”
