Members of the Pagosa Nordic Club have been busy preparing for another great cross-country ski season.
Current groomed cross-country ski trails include Alberta Park, located at and compliments of the Wolf Creek Ski Area, and Fall Creek Road (FS 39) located a couple miles east of the overlook hairpin turn, on Wolf Creek Pass.
The first weekend of free activities includes a Sunset/Moonrise, Soup and Chili Ski Social on Dec. 9, and our Learn to X-C Ski Clinic on Dec. 10.
Join us Friday, Dec. 9, between 4 and 7 p.m., and enjoy a beautiful ski/snowshoe under an incredible sunset and moonrise. We all meet back at the trailhead for a campfire and hot soup and chili afterwards. This is a great, family-friendly activity. You can bring something to share, though it is not expected.
We will determine the social location as snow conditions permit, so keep an eye on PagosaNordic.Com for details. Additional season social dates are Jan. 6, Feb. 3 and March 2.
Saturday, Dec.10, is the season’s first, free Learn to X-C Ski Clinic, starting at 9:45 a.m. and lasting until noon. This is a great opportunity to learn basic skills and tips to help you feel more comfortable and get you out on the trails more often. Participants will be able to choose between beginner or intermediate levels for X-C Skate Ski or X-C Classic (kick and glide) instruction from some of the area’s best skiers. You will need to come with your boots, poles and ski equipment, dressed warm in layers. All local ski shops are offering discount rentals for the clinic; just mention you are attending the clinic. Please e-mail the club at PagosaNordicClub@Yahoo.Com to let us know you are going to attend, so we can be sure to have enough instructors for the event, However, if you forget to R.S.V.P., please come anyway! Location to be determined, as snow conditions permit, so keep an eye on PagosaNordic.Com for details. Additional winter season clinic dates are: Jan. 14 and Feb. 4.
Additional activities include a free Dog Harness Demo day on Jan. 7 and a Fun Canine Ski Jouring race on Jan. 8 . On Jan. 7, bring your friendly dog, try out some harness gear and learn some harness techniques with your canine friend. Imagine teaching your dog how to pull you along on your bike, skis, inline skates and more. The following day, bring your friendly dogs out for a canine ski jouring race to try out any new gear and techniques you learned the day before. Location details as snow conditions permit; see our webpage.
This seasons X-C Ski race events include:
• The second annual Winter Fest Nordic Ski Races, Feb. 17-19, including kids’ races, competitive and citizen X-C classic and skate ski races with sprint, relay, distance and mock biathlon race events.
The first annual Pagosa Paw Dog Sled and Canine Ski Jouring Races are the following weekend on Feb. 25-26. This Colorado Mountain Mushers two-day event includes multi-dog team division dog sled, canine ski jouring and canine cross races. Truly an incredible spectator event, it is not to be missed.
The first annual Pagosa “Spring” Quad Challenge is the following weekend on March 3, and includes a 10km skate ski or 5 km classic ski, a 3 km run, 20km bike and 1 km swim at The Springs Resort. Will you be ready for the challenge?
