Billie Louise Crowley Sumners, Dec. 10, 1916, to July 23, 2011. Born and raised in Post, Texas, to a family of eight children, Billie’s early life consisted of tricks played on brothers and sisters and activities in the church with much humor and a lot of singing. She and husband Jewel Sumners moved to Laguna Beach, Calif., in 1935. Here her love of life and sense of humor brought her to careers as a bank teller, member of the Laguna Beach School Board and as longtime school secretary at her beloved Aliso Elementary School.
Numerous summers spent in Chromo, Colo., surrounded by her extended family of Crowley, Shahan and Eaklor cousins brought her great adventures under the Continental Divide. In 1975, the Sumners moved to Tempe, Ariz., and Billie developed more friends while playing golf and bridge. Her Tempe First United Methodist Church friends provided companionship and comfort until her death. Throughout her life, Billie was a true friend to countless people who were greatly enriched by having known her.
Billie was preceded in death by husband, Jewel Sumners, son, Warren Sumners, stepson, Happy Sumners, and seven brothers and sisters, Grady, Lonnie and Jim Crowley, Odessa Hutto, LuDell Morgan, Mildred Collin, and Maurine Stephenson.
She is survived by grandchildren Steven Sumners (Shannon) of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Kathryn Sumners Maguire (Jason) of Chesapeake, Va., great grandchildren, Evan and Mitchell Maguire, and daughter-in-law Rose Sumners.
A memorial service will be held at the Tempe First United Methodist Church on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011.
