After a long and happy life, Walter went home quietly with family surrounding him early on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011.
Born in Denver Jan. 12, 1927, Walter was raised in St. Joseph, Mo., and Amarillo, Texas. He graduated high school and joined the millions of other Americans in the Navy during World War II. After leaving the Navy, he returned to Amarillo and discovered the love of his life, Frankie Joyce Mansfield, and they married Dec. 11, 1948.
Walter worked hard all his life, but his favorite things were his family and his many friends. He was at his happiest sitting at a cafe with a cup of coffee and a few friends to banter with.
Walter is survived by a daughter, Shelly Marmaduke, of Pagosa Springs; two granddaughters, Andrea Finney of Amarillo, Texas, and Meredith Marmaduke, also of Amarillo; and six great-grandchildren: Quinn Finney, 21, McCall Frazer, 21, Aaron Finney, 19, Bauer Frazer, 17, Maitlyn Frazer, 14, and Max Harmon, 8.
The family has requested that any memorials be sent to honor the wonderful, caring people of Mercy Home Health and Hospice at 35 Mary Fisher Circle, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147.
