The Lady Pirate volleyball team geared up for the season with a morning of scrimmages last Saturday, hosted at the Pirate gyms.
“The scrimmage went well,” Coach Connie O’Donnell said. “We held our own, and it was just a good opportunity to play solid for four hours.”
Hitting, O’Donnell said, was better for all members of the team, but especially from Kelsy Sellers.
“Kelsy playing the outside really stood out,” O’Donnell said. Due to Sellers’ performance, O’Donnell will start her on the outside for the team’s opener against Cortez on Thursday.
The other starters will be Brooklynn DuCharme, Katie Armbrecht, Gabby Pajak, Megan Davies and Leslie Baughman.
To prepare for their match against Cortez, a team they faced in the scrimmages, the Pirates were intent on improving serve and serve receive, as well as blocking.
“When we faced Cortez in the scrimmage, we played well,” O’Donnell said, insinuating that Thursday’s match will be close.
The first match of the season will be today, Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. at Cortez.
