The Pagosa Lakes Porpoises Swim Team competed in their final regular season swim meet last week before beginning the championship phase.
Eleven athletes traveled to Montrose over the weekend in a last attempt to qualify for the Western Slope Championships.
Fabiola Acevedo-Auli, Valeria Acevedo-Auli, Keanan Anderson, Katie Armbrecht, Emily Bryant, Trenton Cordova, Andie Miller, Austin Miller, Valeria Monterroso, Isabelle Pajak and Owen Sutton represented the Porpoises at the meet.
Fabiola Acevedo-Auli, age 9, finished her season with several personal best times. Fabiola joined the Porpoises late in the season, but has demonstrated remarkable improvement in the few short weeks. She placed 26th in the 50 back, 15th in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke, 27th in the 100 free, 20th in the 50 free and 17th in the 100 back.
Competing in her first meet, Valeria Monterroso (10) swam the 25 free, 50 back, 100 free, 25 back, 50 free and 25 breaststroke.
V.V. Acevedo-Auli (11) had a great meet, qualifying for the Western Slope Championships in five events. She finished in the top 10 in the 100 free, 50 back, 100 fly, 200 free, 200 back, and 200 IM. She placed fourth in 400 freestyle with a time of 6:43.21, qualifying for the Seasonal State Championships.
Andie Miller (12) and Isabelle Pajak (11) also competed in the girls 11-12 division. Miller placed in the top 20 in the 50 back and 200 free, ninth in the 200 breast and 10th in the 200 back. She also competed in the 100 free, 100 breaststroke, 50 breaststroke, 100 back and 50 free. Pajak placed 29th and 26th in the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke events, 21st in the 100 free, 13th in the 200 free and 50 free, 11th in the 50 back, ninth in the 200 back, and 14th in the 100 back.
Continuing the season with great technique and time improvement, Keanan Anderson (11) had several personal bests. He placed 20th in the 100 free, dropping 4.85 seconds, 16th in the 50 free, 15th in the 50 backstroke, 11th in the 50 breaststroke, and ninth in the 100 IM. Anderson placed eighth in the 200- and 100-breaststroke events and the 100 back. He will compete in five events at the Western Slope Championships this weekend in Grand Junction.
Trenton Cordova joined Keanan in the boys 11-12 age group. Trenton improved his time in every event, placing in the top 10 in the 200 breaststroke and 100 back and in the top 20 in the 100 free, 50 back, 200 free, 100 IM and 50 free.
Owen Sutton (11) placed fourth in the 400 free, fifth in the 100 back, sixth in the 200 back, seventh in the 100 fly, eighth in the 50 back and 200 free, and 12th in the 100 free.
Katie Armbrecht (17) scored 111 points for the Porpoises, placing seventh in the 50 free, fifth in the 100 free and 100 back, second in the 50 back, 200 free, 50 fly, and 200 IM, and first in the 100 fly and 100 IM.
Emily Bryant, age 15, placed sixth in the 50 back, 100 IM, and 200 IM, fifth in the 50 free, fourth in the 100 fly and 200 back, third in the 100 free, 200 free and 100 back.
Competing in his fifth meet of the season, Austin Miller (17) finished first in the 50 fly, third in the 100 IM, sixth in the 200 IM and seventh in the 200 free, 100 back and 50 free.
Austin Miller, Emily Bryant, Katie Armbrecht, Owen Sutton, Keanan Anderson and V.V. Acevedo-Auli will travel to Grand Junction Friday to compete in the Western Slope Championships. This will be their last chance to qualify for the Seasonal State Championships, to be held in Craig Aug. 5-7.
