Locals attend state square dance festival

Members of the High Country Square Dance Club attended the “Party Under The Peak” 56th annual State Festival on June 10 and 11 in Colorado Springs.

With a view of the majestic Pikes Peak, dancers enjoyed regional callers and talented cuers. Hosted by the Southeast Area Council, hundreds of dancers traveled to the event, which is held in a different Colorado city each year.

Our 20 beginning dancers have been busy learning at the weekly classes held on Mondays. After the first three weeks of lessons, the class is closed so the new dancers can progress together through the months ahead until graduation in November. Those who miss due to vacation have a chance to catch up in the pre class sessions.

The Four Corners Dancers of Cortez, will have their annual July 5 barbecue/potluck at the home of Ruth and Richard Berry of Cortez at 4 p.m. Following is a square dance with caller Tom Roper held at the Kemper Elementary School at 7. Many Pagosans make the drive to attend this special event and dance with our friends in the Four Corners.

July 11 is a special Ice Cream Sunday dance (on Monday) in Pagosa with Jim Park. Beginner lessons start at 6:30 to 8 p.m. followed by Mainstream and Plus dancing from 8 to 9:30..

The High Country Squares offers weekly dances, regional dances and a wonderful sense of community for local and visiting dancers.
