Huck Finn results
Huck Finn Fishing Day attracted over 80 young anglers to the River Center the afternoon of May 26, and the rainbow trout which had been recently stocked in the ponds were in the biting mood for the first couple of hours.
As a result, most youngsters who participated hooked at least one fish, and several took home a few complimentary prizes (new fishing poles), as well.
The prize for first fish caught went to 8-year-old Nicole Bartz of Pagosa Springs, who hooked and landed a 10-inch rainbow minutes into the event, then caught several more throughout the afternoon. The award for largest fish went to 6-year-old Lucas Candelaria of Pagosa, who landed a 16-inch rainbow. Pagosan Hannah Rockensock, age 6, took the prize for smallest fish of the day after netting a seven-inch rainbow.
In addition, 11-year-old Benton Novack of Pagosa Springs attended in costume and walked away with first place in the “Looks Most Like Huck Finn” contest, while 8-year-old Pagosan Amelia Laverty took top honors for best resembling Becky Thatcher.
Thanks goes out to everyone from the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the National Wild Turkey Federation and local law enforcement who helped make this year’s event a success.
