Four local Destination ImagiNation teams ended their school year with a trip to the DI Global Finals, proudly representing Pagosa Springs schools and Team Colorado (CODI).
The DI Global Tournament is held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville every May. Each of the teams excelled at the Colorado DI Tournament and qualified to compete at “Globals.” The 2011 competition hosted almost 1,200 teams from around the United States and the world.
According to CODI Affiliate Director Kate Donelan, half of the CODI teams finished in the top 20 places at Globals. One Pagosa team, the Pagosa Imaginators VI, placed 11th overall in the secondary Science Challenge. The Imaginators ranked first in the Instant Challenge against the 57 secondary level teams.
Two other Pagosa High School teams, the Double Back Trackers and Spazztastic, also traveled to the Global Tournament. Pagosa Elementary School’s Smartalics made the cross-country journey and plan to return to future Global competitions.
Destination ImagiNation is an academic co-curricular activity that teaches problem-solving, teamwork and creativity. Each team is coached by volunteer managers who spend countless hours preparing their teams for regional, state and global tournaments.
Pagosa Destination ImagiNation is sponsored by the Archuleta School District and funded through the state tournament, like other co-curricular activities. Individuals and southwest Colorado service organizations and businesses fund the DI students’ trip to the Global Finals.
