Two suspects held in Arboles murder case

A traffic accident originally reported to the Colorado State Patrol and Southern Ute Indian Tribe Police Department has turned into a homicide investigation by the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office, with two men arrested on murder charges.

The victim, 45-year-old Andrew Montoya, of Dulce, N.M., was killed the afternoon of March 11 on County Road 500 near mile marker 40 in what was originally reported to be a traffic accident, said Det. Rich Valdez of the ACSO.

Valdez said additional information led to the homicide investigation into the matter.

Two suspects have been arrested for possible involvement in the incident — Nathan Lucas, 24, and David Peterson, 31, both of Arboles. They are being held at the Archuleta County Detention Center, Valdez reported.

Peterson is being held on charges of 1st degree murder and robbery. Lucas is being held on charges of 1st degree murder, aggravated robbery, burglary and theft.

The investigation into the matter is continuing, said Valdez
