A theatre only opens once

A theatre only opens once and you bet we are going to make a big deal about it.

On Friday April 15, at 6 p.m. the doors to the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts will officially open for the Premier Gala of the Breaks Black Box Theatre.

The Breaks Black Box was designed by John Santangelo, a professional designer from Las Vegas, and built by the tireless and big-hearted Pagosa Springs volunteers.

More than 300 people showed up for the open house in November 2010 to see what potential the Old Paint Connection building had to become the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts, and to see what kind of innovation and passion it would take to get there.

On Friday, April 15, Pagosa Springs will have a chance to see this big idea come to fruition while celebrating the opening and pitching in to support the future success of the project.

Make Pagosa Springs a more vibrant, thriving and economically sound community, by buying a ticket to the gala event. Your ticket includes a sit-down dinner catered by the Alley House,  an open bar and beautiful music while you are surrounded by good people and inspiring art. Let us take you away to one of the most elegant and upscale restaurant settings in New York City, feed you food meant for the stars and then the Thingamajig Theatre Company will transport you, via the Breaks Black Box, into the basement where the reservations for the said restaurant are made — where you will laugh until you cry at the hilarious and flawless portrayal of over 40 characters by the talented, award winning and critically acclaimed Christopher Willard, whose job it is to inform many desperately snooty and desperately funny New Yorkers that, unfortunately, the restaurant is “Fully Committed” for the evening.

After the show a delicious desert will await the lucky ticket holders as well as a chance to meet the brilliant Mr. Willard who has acted, directed and written for theatres all over Colorado and is currently the artistic director of the Backstage Theatre in Breckenridge.

We promise when we  open the doors to send you home to your beautiful mountain house, you won’t have to get on an airplane to get there.

Tickets must be purchased in advance for this evening. Ticket sales will stop at 4 p.m. on Friday. There are a limited number of seats and it would be a good idea to get your tickets before we are Fully Committed. Reservations can be made online at www.pagosacenter.org or by calling 731-SHOW.

The fabulous and famous strong community support by Pagosa Springs will be rewarded over and over again by the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts and the Thingamajig Theatre Company.

The Thingamajig Theatre Company is planning a full season of quality, professionally produced theatre for our visitors and locals alike. They will produce six shows between now and September, adding extra activities for the tourist population. Local shop, restaurant and hotel owners might be rewarded by the Thingamajig Theatre Company’s strong presence because a study by the National Endowment for the Arts showed that theatre patrons spend more money on food, lodging and shopping when they are traveling than any other type of tourist. The same study also showed that theatre patrons were much more likely to own second homes than the average person. So, if you are a Realtor, you had better come check out the Thingamajig Theatre Company so you know what you are selling!

Also, the Thingamajig Theatre Company is proud to support our young people by offering the “Final Dress First Thursday” of each production to kids 18 and under for free, starting with “Brilliant Traces” on May 12. No adults are allowed at these shows; they are for our young people to enjoy a night out together. Local artists will have a constant and continually changing art gallery in which to display their art, with our “Open Call to Artists” for a variety of shows. The dates and description of these Open Calls are available on the website www.pagosacenter.org.

These are just a few ideas of how the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts can help Pagosa Springs. Now, get online and buy your ticket to the premier gala or, if that doesn’t fit your schedule or budget, pick up a ticket for “Fully Committed”  for April 16,17, 21, 22 or 23.
