On the weekend of May 14 and 15, there will be two full days of rodeo at the Western Heritage Event Center located at U.S. 84 and Mill Creek Road.
The Basin High School Rodeo Club, which consists of members from Pagosa Springs, Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio, will host the two-day event.
Saturday at 9 a.m., the Colorado Junior High Rodeo (CJHR) will begin with members in grades six through eight competing against one another. Half an hour after the junior high rodeo, the Colorado State High School Rodeo (CSHSRA) members will be in the arena.
On Sunday, the high school contestants will start things off at 8 a.m. and the junior high members will follow.
Cowboys and cowgirls from all over the state of Colorado will be in Pagosa Springs to compete. There is only one CJHR and CSHSRA sanctioned rodeo per weekend, so we’re sure to have a good number of contestants.
There will be no gate charge for this event, so come on out and watch the most talented rodeo youth in the state. Rough stock events such as bull riding and bronc riding will take place, as well as timed events, including barrel racing, roping, steer wrestling and much more.
In order to enter either rodeo, a competitor must be a member of the Colorado Junior High Rodeo Association or the Colorado State High School Rodeo Association. For more information on these associations, visit www.cshsra.org. Members must meet the same eligibility requirements as in any other Colorado high school sport.
