Birthday bash to benefit Pagosa Springs Youth Center

Fifty is Nifty…..

Or as the members of the Pagosa Springs Youth Center say, It’s much greater than that.

On Monday March 28, at 5:30 p.m., Michelle Jamison will celebrate her 50th birthday at Nello’s Bistro . Michelle wanted to celebrate her big 50 but wanted to celebrate it with a twist. Michelle found out that the Pagosa Springs Youth Center was serving the kids an after-school snack or a meal at no charge, every day. When the attendance numbers began to increase, Michelle knew it was a financial struggle to keep the program going without support of some sort.

So, Michelle contacted the Youth Center and said that, for her birthday, she wanted all of her friends in the community to come celebrate with her but instead of presents she wants everyone to make at least a $25 donation to the Youth Center.

Michelle is paying for the “Birthday Buffet” being prepared by Nello’s and there will be music by Leadfoot Ruthie from 6-8 p.m. There will be birthday cake and a cash bar with specialty drinks as well. Nello’s is also offering a special dinner menu for those that want to dine the night away.

The Pagosa Springs Youth Center is averaging 40 students Monday-Thursday after school, and last Friday the Youth Center hit its largest day ever with 102 students signed in. Staffed by volunteers and AmeriCorps members Jo Ferko and Soledad Leo, the Youth Center is a great place for kids to hang with their friends, play basketball, skate, play pool and, of course, get something to eat.

Michelle was a longtime staff member at the Ross Aragon Community Center and many community members worked with Michelle at the center. Michelle is also a member of the Ruritan Club and recently the club made a $100 donation to keep the food coming for the after-school program. Ruritan National is a service club located in small towns and rural areas in the United States. It aims to achieve “Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service”.

Michelle Jamison’s commitment to our youth and to community service is clearly something to celebrate. And what a special birthday it is for her!
