Pagosa Springs Elementary School will host a Scholastic Book Fair Nov. 8-18 during school hours in the school library.
Families, teachers and the community are invited to attend the Fair, which will feature a special theme: Here’s to Our Heroes — Reading Saves the Day! Many activities at the school accompany the book fair and the hero theme.
On Thursday, Nov. 11, from 5-7 p.m., the Partners In Education Committee (P.I.E.) will host a Family Night which invites families to attend dinner and an evening with local heroes. Veteran’s Day is a perfect day to celebrate heroes. First, dinner will be served from 5-6:45 p.m. and local law enforcement officers and firemen and women will be in attendance. Some of Pagosa’s local military heroes are members of the American Legion Honor Guard and they will demonstrate folding a flag at 6 p.m. So every student can demonstrate the hero inside them, students will participate in a variety of craft activities that will be donated to local agencies to brighten the holiday season.
The book fair will also be open during the school’s Thanksgiving luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 17.
The elementary school has been hosting a book fair since 1982. The fall 2009 book fair netted the school $2,124.72 in cash, over $100 in books and $125 in resource materials for the library. Proceeds from book fairs are used for reading and educational improvements and help fund the purchase of necessary unbudgeted supplies for the school. This summer, a SMARTBoard and projector were added to the school’s library, and book fair proceeds also assisted in the purchase of the new playground structure. Individuals attending the event can also help build individual classroom libraries by purchasing books for teachers through the Classroom Wish List Program which is highlighted within the Book Fair.
The Book Fair will offer specially priced books and educational products, including newly released titles, award-winning titles, children’s classics, beautiful hardback books, interactive software, and book titles from more than 150 publishers. There are products for all age ranges and many excellent gift ideas.
