Porpoises head for Western Slope Championships

The Pagosa Lakes Porpoises Swim Team competed in the Montrose Last Chance Invitational last weekend.

Representing the Porpoises in the 10 and Under division were Keanan Anderson, Trenton Cordova, Makayla Garcia, Isabelle Pajak, and Eva Philips. Bailey King, age 12, who has been training with the team while visiting Pagosa from Texas, joined the Porpoises in competition. Kelsea Anderson, Erika Pitcher and Emily Bryant competed in the 11 and Over division.

Keanan Anderson, 10, placed second in the 25-meter butterfly. Anderson also competed in the 100 freestyle, 50 fly, and 50 free. He added the 50 breaststroke and the 100 backstroke to his list of Western Slope qualifications.

Cordova also qualified for the Western Slope Championships in the 100 back, finishing in 2:14.45. He placed fourth in the 25 back and seventh in the 25 free. He also swam the 50 back, 100 free and the 50 free.

Makayla Garcia competed in Saturday’s events, finishing the 25 free, 50 back and 25 fly.

Pajak and Philips both exceeded expectations in their swimming debut. Both girls competed in the 50 back, 50 breaststroke, and 50 free, while Pajak swam the 100 free and 100 back and Philips placed seventh in the 100 back.

King medaled in the 200 back; she also swam the 50 fly, the 100 breaststroke, the 100 free and the 50 back.

Bryant swam away with a first place finish in the 800 free and second place finishes in the 50 and 100 frees events and the 100 individual medley. She placed third in the 400 free, 50 fly and 100 fly. Bryant also swam the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM.

Kelsea Anderson placed third in the 50 breaststroke, dropping four seconds from her swim in Pueblo. She finished sixth in the 800 free, 100 IM and the 100 back. Anderson also swam the 100 free, 200 free, 100 breast and 50 free.

Pitcher swam her best meet of the season, dropping time in nearly every event. She placed first in the 50 free and the 50 fly, and second in the 100 fly. She also scored team points in the remainder of her events — the 100 free, 800 free, 200 free, 200 fly and 100 back.

The Porpoises leave Friday for Grand Junction to compete in the Western Slope Championships. Austin Miller, Dane Murdock, Kelsea Anderson, Erika Pitcher, Katie Armbrecht, Blake Irons, Keanan Anderson, and Owen Sutton will compete in the three-day event at the Mesa State pool.
