Last week, the Pagosa Piranhas swim team, under the direction of Coach Marky Egan, competed in the Cortez Invitational Swim Meet.
Swimmers traveled from Santa Fe, Farmington, Durango, Montrose, Delta, Cortez, Telluride and Pagosa Springs.
On Friday, the Piranhas youngest swimmers competed in the outdoor six-lane pool. Sophia Raymond had a personal best time in her 25- yard freestyle, shedding 16 seconds in her second swim in a meet thus far. Turning around on little rest, she climbed back into the water, swimming the 50 frees and 25 backstroke, placing in the top 15 in both events.
Erin Monkiewicz swam away with top honors, achieving the High Point Award for the girls 8 and under division with four first place finishes. She swam the 25 free, 100 free, 100 individual medley, and the 50 free
The Everett family, consisting of Andrew, Evan and Ann, continue to make impressive gains in the pool with strong finishes. With this being their debut swimming season, the siblings have proven they are leaders in and out of the water. They are increasing their endurance in the long distance events and both Andrew and Evan placed in the top six swimmers in the boys’ 13 and 14 age group.
Joey Berndt had a personal best time in his 100-meter back, shredding 28 seconds off his previous time. He met his goal by breaking four minutes in the 200 free, landing him in eighth place.
Swimming eight events over the long, hot weekend, James Berndt and Trevor Bryant competed well. James took third in the 100 butterfly, finishing strong to the wall and chipping off four seconds for a personal best swim in a long-course pool. Trevor Bryant has mastered the breaststroke, which has opened the door for him swimming the 200 IM and breaststroke events.
One of the most exciting races occurred when Devan Monkiewicz out touched a Montrose opponent with a stretch of his arm and a forceful kick in the 100 breaststroke.
This weekend, the team will travel to Gunnison. Other meets scheduled for the summer are in Ouray, Durango, Montrose, Grand Junction and the Summer Club Championship in Colorado Springs.
