The recreation office is now accepting registrations for this year’s “Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs” program, which will be held Mondays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. from June 7-28 at Lake Forest.
With the assistance of the Promoting Prevention Coalition, Pagosa Springs Parks and Recreation Departments and Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association, up to 25 children ages 8-13 can participate in this educational outdoor experience.
Registration cost is $25 and includes use of fishing poles, bait and flies for those in need, plus drinks and snacks. Participants are welcome to bring their own fishing gear, as well. Insect repellent and sunscreen will also be made available.
The program is again being conducted with donations and on-site assistance from John and Lori Unger of BossTin (suppliers of lead-free weights and shots), 4-H leaders Ken and Charlotte Jones, and Promoting Prevention Coalition member Joanne Irons. Parent volunteers are welcome to assist, as well.
Registrations are available at the recreation office in Town Hall, and can also be downloaded through the recreation department link at www.townofpagosasprings.com. Registrations should be submitted to the recreation office; checks and money orders should be made payable to the Town of Pagosa Springs.
For more information, call the recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 232.
The youth tennis program, which is in its fourth year, is open to youths ages 7-12. Registrations are available at the recreation office and are also available through a link on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com. Registrations will be accepted at the recreation department until 5 p.m. today.
The program will consist of two monthly sessions, one in June and one in July. Each session will be comprised of two, hourly practices per week. Players with previous experience will be separated from beginners, and the tentative plan is to hold staggered practice sessions Monday through Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.
A minimum of four participants will be required to conduct a session; the maximum number of participants per session will be limited to 16. The program will again use the U.S.T.A. “Quick Start” Tennis Instructional Program. This program adheres to a “play to learn” rather than “learn to play” motto.
Cost to participate is $30 per monthly session. Participants must have nonmarking-soled athletic or tennis shoes. The recreation department has some racquets available, but participants are welcome to use their own equipment.
For more information, call Andy Rice at 264-4151, Ext. 231, or Dale Schwicker, Wyndam Resorts tennis professional, at 731-3363.
Youth baseball schedules are available at the recreation office and are also available for download through the recreation department link at www.townofpagosasprings.com.
On a related note, formal play in the 11-12 division has been canceled due to a lack of participation, and refunds are available at the recreation office in Town Hall.
Games in the coach-pitch and 9-10 division begin next week; the season will run through early July.
