Saturday, July 10, kicks off the fourth annual Pagosa Duathlon “Do-the-Du.”
First-timers, casual competitors and diehards alike love this event. Surrounded by the beauty of our very own pristine San Juan Mountains, grassy fields, aspen groves and challenging rocky bike paths await you.
For our rising star athletes, the fun begins at 8 a.m. with the kids’ Mini-Du race. Kids run a half-mile, then finish with a one-mile mountain bike ride. All kids are winners at the Mini-Du, each receiving a special prize.
Then we’re off to the adult races with the Half and Full Duathlons. All competitors start together, with the Half-Du racers completing one three-mile run loop, then jumping on their mountain bikes for a seven-mile trek. Full-Duers run the loop a second time before speeding off for their 12-mile bike ride. Full and Half Duathlons begin at 8:30 a.m.
The Pagosa Duathlon welcomes individual athletes as well as teams of two for each leg of the race. We can match runners with bikers and vice versa for those seeking a race partner. “Du”-o or solo …it’s up to you!
Younger competitors under the age of 18 are enthusiastically encouraged to participate with the written consent of a parent/guardian. We love to see our young athletes on the course.
Race routes integrate beginner and intermediate levels of single-track trail, ATV and gravel roads. But, for the not so fainthearted, the dreaded Piedra Stock Driveway challenges the most experienced riders. The venue of the San Juan National Forest could not be more perfect for athletes as they soar through the most amazing scenery, breathing in pure mountain air. The course is fast, testing each competitor’s endurance, speed and ability, ending to the roar of excited spectators at the much anticipated finish line.
Athletes will refueled with food and fun while awaiting the chance to win the many prizes we have to give away. Each competitor will also receive an official race T-shirt. Awards and prizes will be presented following the race. Spectators are always welcome.
Registration details can be found at the Pagosa Lakes Recreation Center, as well as online at www.ACVAP.org. If your business would like to be a race sponsor, call 264-9075 for details. Gold level sponsors receive free registrations.
All proceeds will benefit the Archuleta County Victim Assistance Program, a local non-profit organization, serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Last year, advocates served 434 victims. Monies raised goes to essential services such as: providing victims and their children emergency housing, food and transportation; purchasing safety materials for the Youth Violence Prevention project; or helping a victim receive professional counseling.
The Pagosa Duathlon “Do-the-Du” is gearing up to be the premier sporting event of the summer with over 100 athletes competing. Visit www.ACVAP.org for race details, maps, photos and more or call 264.-9075 for more information. We’ll see you at the “Du.”
