The Pagosa Springs Recreation Department is offering youth tennis instruction this summer, thanks again to cooperation on behalf of Wyndam Resorts.
The program, which is in its fourth year, is open to youths ages 7-12. Registrations are available at the recreation office. Registrations are also available through a link on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com. Registrations will be accepted at the recreation office until Thursday, May 27.
The program will consist of two monthly sessions, one in June and one in July. Each session will be comprised of two, hourly practices per week. Players with previous experience will be separated from beginners, and the tentative plan is to hold staggered practice sessions Monday through Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.
A minimum of four participants will be required to conduct a session; the maximum number of participants per session will be limited to 16. The program will again use the U.S.T.A. “Quick Start” Tennis Instructional Program. This program adheres to a “play to learn” rather than “learn to play” motto.
Cost to participate is $30 per monthly session. Participants must have nonmarking-soled athletic or tennis shoes. The recreation department has some racquets available, but participants are welcome to use their own equipment.
For more information, call Andy Rice at 264-4151, Ext. 231, or Dale Schwicker, Wyndam Resorts tennis professional, at 731-3363.
Huck Finn Day
This year’s Huck Finn Fishing Day is set for Friday, May 21 from 1:30-5:30 p.m. at the River Center ponds.
Youths ages 5-11 are eligible to participate; parents and guardians are welcome to attend. Costumes are not required, but prizes will be awarded to the young male entrant who best resembles Huckleberry Finn, and the young female entrant who bears the closest likeness to Becky Thatcher. Prizes will also be awarded for first fish, smallest fish and biggest fish.
The event will again be coordinated and supervised through the joint efforts of local law enforcement, the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Town of Pagosa Springs Recreation Department.
Youngsters are welcome to bring their own fishing gear, and a few loaner rods and plenty of bait will be available for those in need. (A Colorado state fishing license is not required for children ages 5-11, but state bag and possession limits will apply.)
While supplies last, a hot-dog dinner will be served during the last two hours of the event, courtesy of the Pagosa Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.
For more information call 264-4151, Ext. 232.
The Pagosa Springs Recreation Department will accept team registrations for the 2010 adult men’s and coed softball leagues beginning Monday, May 17. Deadline for registration is Monday, May 31.
Registration forms will be available at the department office, which is located upstairs in Town Hall. Anyone who is 16 years of age or older is eligible to participate in the leagues. Team registration fees are $250, plus a $30 fee per player. Checks and money orders should be made payable to the Town of Pagosa Springs.
The leagues are tentatively scheduled to begin in late June. For more information call Andy Rice, recreation supervisor, at 264-4151, Ext. 231.
Rosters for the coach-pitch division (ages 6-8) are being finalized and will be available to head coaches early next week.
The draft for the 9-10 division will be held tonight at 6 p.m. in Town Hall. All head coaches for the 9-10 division should attend.
On a related note, there are still not enough participants registered for the 11-12 division to warrant a league this year. The recreation office will accept registrations for this age bracket through the end of the week. However, unless there is a significant amount of additions to this bracket, the league will be canceled and all registered participants will be issued a refund.
Games in all divisions are tentatively scheduled to begin in late May; the season will run through early July. For more information on this year’s program, call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.
