A La Plata County judge has sentenced Waylon Sutton, the Bayfield teen who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor careless driving following the death of Pagosa Springs resident Kenneth L. Laskey in 2009.
La Plata County Judge Martha Minot sentenced Sutton to 30 days in the DeNier Youth Center in Durango, supervised probation for two years and 200 hours of community service.
In addition, Minot ordered a mental health evaluation and stipulated that Sutton receive any treatment recommended by the evaluation. Sutton was ordered to not drive for another year and to take a defensive driving course for young drivers.
Minot also recommended that Sutton place a memorial to Laskey at U.S. 160 milepost 107, where the collision occurred.
Laskey’s son and daughter spoke at the sentencing.
The head-on collision occurred at 7:50 a.m. on July 16, 2009, three miles east of Bayfield.
