Over the past months, members of the community have been putting together bowling teams, collecting donations and making plans to take part in the annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters.
This year’s event will take place Saturday at Rolling Thunder Lanes in Ignacio, a part of Sky Ute Casino and Resort’s luxurious facility.
Although Bowl for Kids’ Sake provides a lot of fun for its participants, in truth, the event is not really about bowling. It is about the kids. Big Brothers Big Sisters, the oldest and most widely respected mentoring organization in the nation, matches children with adult volunteer mentors. The Bigs and Littles get together once a week to enjoy a variety of activities that help to grow and solidify a trusting friendship.
Certainly, the benefits of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program are far-reaching. Studies show that children in mentoring relationships have higher self-esteem, grow in social and life skills, make better grades in school, and are better able to avoid drugs and alcohol. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a safe way for these children to develop these bonds of friendship. Each match is carefully monitored by the community coordinator, who makes sure that the standards of the agency are being met and that the relationship between the Big and Little is growing in a healthy and productive way.
As a non-profit agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters depends on the support of local community members and businesses. Bowl For Kids’ Sake offers a fun way to gather to celebrate children, mentoring and friendship. The day will be filled with the sounds of strikes, spares, gutter balls, cheers, groans and plenty of laughter.
