Baseball season opener postponed

The Pagosa Springs High School baseball team will have to wait an extra week to take the field.

The season opener, scheduled for March 6, in Salida, was postponed due to muddy field conditions, said head coach Dave Close. The game has not yet been rescheduled.

Instead, the team will see its first action Friday and Saturday in the form of a tournament in Moab. The Pirates will play two games, one each day.

Due to the “usual Pagosa Springs problems with the weather,” the team has been practicing on the asphalt of the high school parking lot and, when available, in gyms, making Close unsure of how competitive the team will be to start the season against teams from warmer, and drier, areas.

“The kids have practiced really hard. We’ve been practicing twice a day,” Close said, adding, “We’ll just have to see. It’s hard when you go from blacktop and play against teams that have been on grass.”

While having 12 away games scheduled, the Pirates will play only four games on their home field this season, with a doubleheader against Bayfield April 17 and another doubleheader the following weekend against Monte Vista.
