Evelyn Joy (DeYoung) Keuning was born March 4, 1941, in Crookston, Minn., and was released from her earthly suffering to be with her Lord on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, in Pagosa Springs. She is survived by her husband, Bruce; a daughter Julie (Robert) Poindexter, in Deltona, Fla.; and a son Daniel (Lisl) Keuning, from Pagosa Springs. Evelyn had six grandchildren: Joelle, Shayne and Ryland Poindexter, plus Jacob, Joshua and Kylie Rose Keuning. She has two older brothers, Alvin (Gerry) DeYoung, in Lakewood, Calif., and Harry (Vivian) DeYoung, Pagosa Springs, and an identical twin sister, Ruth (Corwin) Schenk, of Bellflower, Calif., plus many nephews and nieces.
Evelyn was a registered nurse and served 33 years working as an emergency room supervisor at Lakewood Regional Medical Center in California. Evelyn moved to California at age 3. Evelyn met Bruce in California and married 47 years ago, living most of their married life in southern California. Evelyn and Bruce moved to Pagosa Springs five years ago after they retired. Evelyn and “BK” enjoyed an exciting life together traveling, spending time with their children and grandchildren, entertaining with family and church friends, plus Evelyn worked part time these past five years with her son Dan at Pagosa Family Medical Clinic.
Evelyn was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer in March 2009. Taking helpful chemo and with the support of countless prayers of family, friends and church members, she was able to extend her zest for living and work for over 11 months, celebrating her life to the fullest! In May of last year, Evelyn and her entire family celebrated a weekend at Disneyland called “Celebrating Life,” with a reception for over 200 of her former co-workers and church friends who turned out to greet her and re-live the memories and good times they had working, sharing and caring together. In addition, showing her desire to live her life to the fullest and to share with others God’s love and grace for her, there were five other trips to Florida and California to be with family and friends.
Services for Evelyn Keuning were held Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. at Mountain Heights Baptist Church (where Pagosa Bible Church currently is meeting). Memorial gifts may be given in Evelyn’s honor to the Pagosa Bible Church Building Fund, c/o P.O. Box 4385, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147, or your local Cancer Society.
