The Pagosa Fitness Challenge 2009 ended Dec. 21, and the winners have been announced.
The challenge was sponsored by the EMS Association as a fund-raiser to benefit the group, its education program and equipment purchases, and ran from Sept. 21 to Dec. 21. The aim of the contest was to enhance the health and wellness of residents of Pagosa Country.
Winners were determined on the basis of highest percentage of body weight lost by an individual and, collectively, by a team. All participants had to be 18 years of age or older. There were 205 people participating in the challenge, with 23 teams enrolled.
Weigh-in Week was held Sept. 21-26. Participants were weighed and free cardiac screenings were provided during the week and throughout the contest period. Local businesses offered health and fitness discounts to participants.
When the final weigh-in was complete, challenge participants had lost a total 650 pounds.
The winning team was Body Shop — Josh Bramble, Lindsay Hoover, Darrin Lewis and Fawn Alonzo. Team members lost a total 84.8 pounds — 38.5 percent of their collective body weight.
The female winner was Catherine Keyawa. Catherine lost 45 pounds — 21 percent of her starting body weight.
The male winner was Steve Voorhis. Steve lost 20 pounds — 9.28 percent of his beginning body weight.
A $500 cash prize went to winners in each category.
