Iona Browning, a longtime Archuleta County resident, passed away Nov. 30, 2009, at her home in Cornville, Ariz. Iona was born on March 20, 1929, on a farm in eastern Colorado. She was the daughter of Herman and Mary Reitmeyer. On March 28, 1948, she married Herb Browning. In 1962, Iona, Herb and daughters, Penny and Cindy, moved to the Colorado Division of Wildlife property located on Devil Creek, west of Pagosa Springs. During her time in Pagosa Country, Iona was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the bell choir. She volunteered during the Christmas bazaar, as well as serving on numerous other church committees. She served on the county election board and wrote hunting and fishing licenses for many years during big game season. She joined the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in 1962. She was an active member until her passing. Upon their retirement, Iona and Herb moved to Cornville, Ariz., where Herb remains.
Iona is survived by her husband, Herb; daughters Penny Planeta (Andy), and Cindy Phillips (Richard); seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a brother, Herman Reitmeyer (Carol).
Services were held at Mountain View Methodist Church in Cottonwood, Ariz., Dec. 6, 2009, at 1:30 p.m.
