Elks Hoop Shoot
After a two-year hiatus, the Elks Club Hoop Shoot Contest returns to Pagosa Springs Saturday, Dec. 12.
The event will begin in the Ross Aragon Community Center gymnasium at 10 a.m.; the gym will be open for warm-up at 9 a.m.
The Hoop Shoot is a free-throw shooting contest sponsored by the Durango Elks Club and is free for boys and girls ages 8-13. All participants may sign up on site the day of the event.
Over 3,000,000 of America’s youth participate in the Hoop Shoot each year, with winners in local contests earning the right to advance to district, state, regional and national contests. National winners’ names are inscribed on a plaque at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
Boys and girls compete separately in the following age categories: 8-9, (age 7 is fine if the youngster will be 8 before April 1, 2010.); 10-11, and 12-13. Youngsters are too old to participate if they will be 14 before April 1, 2010.
Qualification and category assignment are determined by a participant’s age as of April 1, 2010. All age groups will shoot free throws on regulation, 10-foot rims.
For more information call Dick Alexander, Hoop Shoot director, at 946-9118, or the recreation office at 264-4151 Ext. 232.
Coaches and parents who ordered youth soccer photos can contact Jeff Laydon at Pagosa Photography, 264-3686, to arrange pickup of their orders. The recreation office will provide sponsors with team plaques and pictures as soon as they are available.
The recreation staff would also like to thank Mr. Laydon for accommodating another busy schedule during this year’s youth soccer season.
This year marks the 13th year Jeff has offered professional photography service to our programs while donating all of the team photographs used in the commemorative plaques free of charge; thanks again.
