Pagosa Pathfinders compete at International Challenge

The 2009 International Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) was held July 27-31, at the NRA Whittington Center at Raton, N.M.

This year’s event was the third largest YHEC competition to date with representation from 18 states.

The competition consisted of eight events: archery, muzzleloader, 22 rifle, shotgun, orienteering, wildlife ID, hunter safety trail and the responsibility exam.

Colorado was represented by seven participants, six of whom were from the Pagosa Pathfinders: Tim Shepherdson, Keaton Anderson, Noah Logan, Dan Shepherdson, Derek Lorenzen, Kyler McKee and coaches John McKee and Boyd Anderson.

Lorenzen won first place in the Junior Division of the Cherokee Run, which is a special event.

Pagosa’s youngsters held their own amidst very tough competition and gained valuable experience for future YHEC competitions.

The Pathfinders would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Pagosa Springs Friends of the NRA for its continued support, allowing them the opportunity to compete in such events.
