Chile Cha Cha: food, music and fun at Town Park

The fourth annual Mountain Chile Cha Cha will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26, in Town Park in downtown Pagosa Springs.

The Cha Cha includes a morning trail race for all ages and abilities, a green chile cookoff and tasting, and a free concert featuring two incredible dance bands — Nosotros and Quemozo. Both bands are guaranteed to have the crowd on their feet.  The event is rain or shine, with a covered stage. Admission is free.

The trail races begin at 9 a.m., with the award ceremony at noon, followed by a tasting of the green chile entries from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., or until the chile is gone.  Quemozo will take the stage at 1:30 with a short break for the green chile cookoff award ceremony at 3:30 followed by a performance from Nosostros at 4.

Food and crafts vendors and the beer garden will open at 11:30 a.m., and there will be roasted green chiles available for purchase.

Embracing Latin styles spanning the globe, Quemozo is New Mexican at heart. Founded in 2005 by award-winning composer and vocalist Felipe Ruibal, Quemozo features a truly all-star combo with Omar Villanueva (lead guitar and vocals), Luis Guerra (contra-bajo), Camilo Quiñones (drums and percussion), and Tony Quiñones (congas and bongos). Original compositions speak of the land and people from Ruibal’s beginnings, and strive to reach the world with a song for the future. Felipe has shared the stage with a variety of world-renowned artists such as the Gypsy Kings, Etta James and Los Lonely Boys.

Nosotros seamlessly combines Latin rhythms with the elements of flamenco, jazz, salsa, and rock, creating an original sound that is unmistakably Nosotros. The band currently performs several nights a week to a large fan base throughout the Southwest at various music festivals, nightclubs, private bookings, and television/radio programs. They have also traveled to Los Angeles, Chicago and San Jose, where they performed at the San Jose Jazz Festival with some of the biggest names in Jazz and Latin music. Their unique, hybrid sound is versatile enough for performances in large venues as well as small intimate settings.
