Pagosa swimmers compete at state

Three swimmers from Pagosa Springs — Erin Monkiewicz, Devan Monkiewicz and Owen Sutton — advanced to the Summer Club Swimming Championships, July 31- Aug. 2 in Fort Morgan, Colo.

More than 20 swim teams from throughout the state of Colorado came together at the end of the summer to compete.

Devan had his best swims of the season over the three-day meet. He took first place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 34.11 seconds. He took two second place finishes — in the 100-butterfly (1:44.75) and 100-individual medley (1:33.01). His performances in the 100-free (1:21.05) and the 200-free (2:57.29) earned him third-place finishes. Devan produced a second-place overall finish in his age group.

It was Owen Sutton’s first appearance qualifying for a state swim championship. He earned a sixth place in the 100-backstroke (1:48.17) and 11th place (48.22) in the 50-back.

As for Erin Monkiewicz, who qualified to swim in all events for the 8-under division, she was unable to participate due to the flu. As Erin’s health improved, she was quoted as saying, “There is always next year, I’ll be back!”

The Summer Club Pagosa Lakes Porpoises swim team participates in swimming from April 1 through Aug. 3. Next year’s state swim meet will be held in Colorado Springs.
