A single-vehicle crash on U.S. 84 at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, resulted in four young Pagosans being taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center at Durango, one suffering what a Colorado State Patrol report listed as serious injuries.
The report notes that a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup was being driven northbound on U.S 84 at Trophy Lake Place, near Chromo when the driver, Jessica Shahan, 20, of Pagosa Springs, failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle skidded off the highway and traveled through two fences before striking an embankment and eventually stopping on its wheels.
According to the CSP report, the driver and three passengers — Cody Shahan, 14, of Chromo; Danny Shahan, 16, of Chromo; and Adriana Shahan, 4, of Pagosa Springs — were transported to Mercy.
Seatbelts were in use by the front-seat passengers, Jessica and Cody Shahan. It is unknown whether the passengers in the rear seat were restrained.
Charges had not been filed as of Wednesday. Excessive speed is suspected as the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.
A Mercy Medical Center representative said Wednesday that all four patients had been examined, treated and released.
