A head-on collision three miles east of Bayfield at 7:50 a.m. Thursday, July 16, claimed the life of Pagosa Springs resident, Kenneth L. Laskey, 49.
According to a report from the Colorado State Patrol, Laskey was westbound on U.S. 160, driving a 1994 Honda Accord when a Jeep Cherokee, driven by Waylon Sutton, 16, of Bayfield drifted across the centerline of the highway, entered the westbound lane and collided with the front of Laskey’s vehicle.
Excessive speed was ruled out as a cause of the accident, and no determination as to the exact cause had been made by release of the initial Colorado State Patrol report.
Laskey was declared dead at the scene by La Plata County Coroner Jan Smith.
Sutton was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center, where he later underwent reconstructive surgery to repair multiple facial injuries. According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Jonathan Silver, Sutton was likely still at Mercy Wednesday afternoon.
Silver said Sutton was charged with Careless Driving Resulting in Death as a result of the incident. The charge is a misdemeanor traffic offense that could bring a fine and possible one year in jail, upon conviction.
