John Graves enjoyed reading excerpts from his newest book, “Animal Verses for Grown-up Children” at the opening reception Thursday evening, May 28, at Town Park Gallery.
This blend of art and humorous verse is a first for the art community of Pagosa Springs. People chuckled and applauded at John’s animated reading.
Sabine Baeckmann-Elge proudly displayed her matted illustrations of the book. The illustrations deserve two to three glances to discover the hidden innuendos mischievously depicted by Baeckmann-Elge.
Also on display is a body of work by Sabine called “Animal Lines,” depicting animals in a unique light. The book is available by special order, as are fine art prints of the illustrations and “Animal Lines.”
Copies of the book and prints are available in the gallery office or by calling Baeckmann-Elge, (970) 769-3635.
If you missed this fabulous opening, the exhibit will run through June 23.

Plein Air Painters
Plein Air Painters meet the third Thursday of the month at a predetermined location. On June 18, we will meet at the Old Barn near U.S.160 on the west side of town. The barn is across the highway from the Turkey Springs Store. Meet at the store at 10 am. Kayla Douglass will give directions from there. Painters who work in any media are welcome. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share tips, ideas and resources. If the weather is nice, we paint outdoors. If the weather is bad we will paint in the Arts and Crafts Room. Please keep in mind that turpentine-based painting materials can not be used in the Community Center. Please call Kayla, 731-9100, if you need more information.
The Pagosa Springs Arts Council sponsors and manages workshops in the Arts and Crafts Room at the community center. From the outset, the Arts Council has been a partner and supporter of the center. Call PSAC at 264-5020 to register for any of the classes and pre-registration is required.
