Ernesto Jose Rivas Sr., 83, passed away May 23, 2009, at Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos, Colo.
He was born in Pagosa Springs April 4, 1926, to Isabell (Lister) Rivas and Fred Rivas, both deceased.
He was married to Amanda (Stollstimer) Rivas. He had two brothers, Lloyd (Faliola) Rivas, deceased, and Lester (Lala) Rivas; one sister, Cora Woolsey; five sons, Albert (Clara) Rivas, James Ville Wes, Ernesto Tito (Lisa) Rivas, Freddy (Pauline) Rivas, Joseph (Wanda) Rivas, and Hank (Marie) Rivas, all of Pagosa Springs; two daughters, Lala (Jim) Willingham, of Pagosa Springs and Sharon Willson of Happy Camp, Calif.; one stepson, Leroy (Molly) Cotton; 29 grandkids; 44 great-grandkids; and numerous nieces and nephews. He lived with Rosemary (Danny) Salas, whom he loved very much.
He worked at the sawmill in Pagosa, then in Mancos. He was chief of police, then a police officer for many years in Pagosa Springs. He served as chief of police in Ignacio, Colo. He loved hunting and fishing.
Rosary will be Thursday, May 28, at 7 p.m. at the new Catholic church on South Pagosa Boulevard. Funeral will be held Friday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at the old church downtown. He will be laid to rest at Hill Top Cemetery.
